Form 990 is used by Nonprofit & Tax-Exempt Organizations to report their income, expenses, and other organization activities with the IRS.
Tax-exempt organizations are required to file nonprofit tax returns with the IRS depending on their gross receipts, total assets, and public charity or private foundation status. Annual information returns include Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF, 990-T, and 990-N. The IRS uses 990 forms to gather information about tax-exempt organizations, educate organizations about tax law requirements, and promote compliance.

IRS Mandated Electronic Filing Requirements
The IRS mandates tax-exempt organizations and private foundations to file 990 Forms electronically. Filing electronically helps the IRS process returns more quickly and allows organizations to get their nonprofit tax returns status instantly.
When is Form 990 Due?
Form 990 is due by the 15th day of the 5th month after the tax period ends. The due date will vary for each organization depending on the accounting period they follow.
If your organization follows a calendar tax period, Form 990 is due by May 16, 2022.
Upcoming Form 990 Deadline:
- If your organization’s accounting tax period starts on June 1, 2021, and ends on May 31, 2022, your Form 990 is due by October 17, 2022.
- If you filed an 8868 extension on April 15, 2022, your Form 990 extended deadline is October 17, 2022.
When is Form 990-T Due?
Form 990-T due date will vary depending on the organization type.
For trusts other than section 401(a) or 408(a), Form 990-T must be filed by the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of the organization’s tax year. If the Organization follows the calendar tax year, the due date is May 16, 2022.
Note: Employees' trusts, defined in section 401(a), IRAs (including SEPs and SIMPLEs), Roth IRAs, Coverdell ESAs, or 408(a) (Archer MSAs) must file Form 990-T by the 15th day of the 4th month after the end of their tax year. If the Organization follows the calendar tax year, the due date is April 18, 2022.

When is Extension Form 8868 Due Date?
Form 8868 must be filed on or before the actual due date of the original 990 return, i.e., the 15th day of the 5th month after the tax period ends. Filing Form 8868 extends your deadline up to 6 months.
